Pitti Tondo Relief Carving Created by Michael Angelo

Is amazing  how Michael Angelo was able to created fantastic Art work with just a few Chissel and a hammer, the technology  was not abance it all, but they have good steel and probably great black Smith’s to make good chisels… But not only Michael  Angelo have the same circumstances it was  many others  Sculptors that created fantastic sculptures like the Roman before Christ, Berninni, Canova and many more with out fancy tools just a Hammer and a Chisel…

In this time and age we are blessed  by all the technology  we have from electric  power tools to big machinery the make are creation  very convenient…

When Michael Angelo Start the Relief Carving of the Pitti Tondo?

Michelangelo returned to Florence after four years of been in Rome,  to create one of the most amazing sculptures true history, one sculpture that changes the period from the Romanesque and Gothic  were the Art was in the stage of primitivist… This piece was the beginning of  revolution way of how the sculpture is created, this was one of the most important commissions of his amazing career;  THE DAVID…

Michael Angelo’s father due to the economic hardship that had fallen on the family request for him to return to Florence “In the spring of 1501, the artist was back home. He returned as one who, with a single masterpiece, had proved that at the age of twenty-six he could claim to be the best sculptor of his country and his age, even though at the time we his competition of the genial  Leonardo da Vinci was still living and working…

What other stone sculptures Michaelangelo was working at the same time with the Pitti Tondo?

His commission of the David for the city of Florence dominated his time in Florence. But there were several other pieces that he created at this time, including the Tondo Pitti, which is also referred to as the Pitti Madonna. The Tondo Pitti was commissioned by Bartolommeo Pitti and was created at about the same time as the Tondo Taddei and The Doni Madonna. These pieces all show Michelangelo’s interest with the subject of the Virgin and Child, but these pieces demonstrate a much freedom with the technic, and also creating a graceful composition that describes the scene of love and motherhood…

Stone carving Pitti tondo

The hands of Michaelangelo creating the Pitti Tondo in Carrara marble…

Much like the Tondo Taddei, the Tondo Pitti was a piece intended to be displayed a the home and not for the grand palace audiences, like the David or the Pieta in St. Peter’s. Many determinate that this piece was to be unfinished but the validity of this argument is more widely disputed than with the Tondo Taddei…

It is suggested that Michelangelo left the work seemingly unfinished that you see in the Pitti Tondo simply because he liked it that way?   No  Michael Angelo saw a new Trent a new form of expression!

That will be the begging of Fredon expression of Contemporary Art,  and we see used in full by  Rodin Art.  Today is the most and used way to created contemporary Art.

“The unworked details give them a suggestive power and the story to continue by the eyes of the public which might have been lost in a more polished finished piece…

Michelangelo’s composition places the Madonna seated on a stone, its forward edge projected toward the viewer, while the figure of the Madonna looks that she is reading a book,  until her son Jesus Christ interrupted her, as he places his elbow, supporting his head onto her book. The child St. John peers over the Virgin’s shoulder, creating a moment of contemplation true making eye contact with one another.

“Michelangelo has used a simple shape to unique effect. He has given the upper edge of the marble, a round shape like a medallion, and also a concavity to created more three-dimensional effect in a relief carving because  with the help  of angles and  round  edges you created the effects  of 3D in a 2D relief carving…

You could ask your self how Michaelangelo was able to create all his amazing artwork like the madonna Pitti Tondo in a beautifully Carrara marble, and all done by hammer and chisels.

In this time and age, we are blessing with electricity, air compressors, any power tools, big machinery to move anything, so imagen Michaelangelo getting an over twenty feet block of  Carrara marble. Less think about this?  one square foot waits for about 150lbs. If we do the matt it will be a lot, how they manage all of this, all done by manpower and horsepower, it was a lot of obstacles but nothing hold him back to create all amazing masterpieces, all done one chisel a the time…

Less assume that we are watching him in his shop, so  how he stared the David, well after they stand the large block of Carrara marble, they build a wooden scaffold, Michaelangelo  probably  draw the silhouette with charcoal sticks and grab his fever mallet that probably waits about 4 pounds  in his right hand and a large pointed chisel and started hammer like a mad men for hours and hours you star see a round shape in the top of the marble and a lot of fragments flying everywhere in the room. He works and works by the end of week one,  he probably has sketched the upper part of the head.
